How much of a time commitment is needed for volunteers?
Commitment levels vary, depending on the volunteer position. The wish granting activities performed by wish volunteers vary and the time required will depend on the type of wish being granted. You may choose to become heavily involved or you may sign up for events one at a time. All volunteers at Make-A-Wish® Greater Virginia are charged with the fragile and beautiful business of making dreams come true. It’s an important and precious job. We do expect a high level of commitment and professionalism from our volunteers. But the rewards are tremendous!
Can I volunteer around my work schedule?
Absolutely! Many of our volunteers are working professionals. We provide the necessary training on evenings and weekends so working professionals are able to attend during non-working hours. Most wish interviews and wish granting activities are scheduled in the evenings and on weekends. Most events and speaking request also happen after business hours.
Why do I have to undergo a criminal background check if I want to be a Wish Granter or office volunteer?
Wish Granters and office volunteers are required to submit a background check, along with any other volunteer who might have direct access to the wish children, their confidential information, or who will be handling and overseeing Make-A-Wish resources. We require a background check in order to protect the wish child, their families, and Make-A-Wish.
Why do I have to pay the $25 fee for my background check?
The cost for each background check is $25.00. With over 200 volunteers, the costs to the chapter become astronomical. By having volunteers cover this expense, we are able to reduce the funds we spend on administrative fees and maximize the funds available for a child’s wish.
What are the next steps?
Your next step is to watch a short orientation video
to learn more about the opportunities to support Make-A-Wish Greater Virginia. Once you have watched the video, you will complete a quiz
and schedule an interview with us so that we can learn more about your interests and help you find the role that is right for you!
Can anyone be a volunteer?
Wish Granters and office volunteers must be at least 21 years old. Most other volunteers must be at least 18 years old. All volunteers must be positive, outgoing, and passionate about our mission.
I am under the age of 18 - how can I help Make-A-Wish?
Children under 18 can still make a big difference for wish kids through our Kids For Wish Kids®
program. To learn more about how you can get involved in Kids For Wish Kids, contact Grace Davis
or call (804) 217-9474.
